If you’ve ever loaded two energetic little boys into the car for a long drive, you know the destination is only half the adventure. Even I have trouble with long car rides!

The real challenge is making it from Point A to Point B without hearing “Are we there yet?” or “I’m hungry” every ten minutes.

After multiple family road trips up and down the California coast, we’ve found the stops that actually work for young kids—places to run, climb, snack, spot wildlife, stretch little legs, and give everyone a much-needed break before getting back in the car.

This isn’t your typical Pacific Coast Highway itinerary filled with scenic overlooks that toddlers and little kids couldn’t care less about (although we’ll include plenty of beautiful views too!).

Crucial Survival Tips for a California Road Trip with Toddlers and Young Kids

A few things that made this trip so much easier with our boys:

• Plan a stop every 1–2 hours. Even 20 minutes at a playground can completely reset everyone’s mood.

• If they are napping, drive through to the next stop!

• Don’t overbook each day. We usually picked one “big” activity and left room for spontaneous stops.

• Pack plenty of snacks and a small cooler.

• If you’re driving an electric vehicle, use charging stops as built-in adventure breaks instead of just waiting in a parking lot.

Santa Cruz is one of our favorite places to begin a California coast road trip with kids. Between giant redwoods, sandy beaches, playgrounds, and the famous Boardwalk, there's enough here to keep little ones busy for several days. We spent two full days exploring and still left with more on our list for next time.

We spent 2 full days in Santa Cruz and were surprised how much there was to do! We had jam packed days but managed to balance fun and rest throughout the day!

Although there aren’t live animals inside, there are plenty of interactive exhibits designed for kids.

Redwood Trees in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park - great energy burner for kids!

If you want your kids to experience California’s giant redwoods without a strenuous hike, this is the place.

The Redwood Grove Loop Trail is mostly flat and stroller friendly. Challenge your kids to see who can find the first banana slug! It became one of our favorite parts of visiting Henry Cowell.

Highlights include:

• Massive 1,500-year-old redwoods

• Trees over 275 feet tall

• The famous Fremont Tree, where the entire family can step inside the hollow trunk

Parent Tip: Bring a flashlight—the kids will love exploring inside the tree.

We walked to Roaring Camp after “hiking” The Redwood Grove Loop Trail!

This was one of our boys' favorite experiences.

The steam train winds through towering redwoods and feels like stepping back in time. The train ride is about 2 hours long - an hour up to the top and 45 mins back. There is a 15 minute stop with bathrooms. 

Parent Tip: Buy tickets well before your trip. We almost missed out because trains often sell out.

There was so much to do here! We visited the penguins and the otters at their designated feeding time but it was super crowded. It’s hard to get there early with little ones who don’t want to sit! I think we had more fun watching both of them when there wasn’t a trainer around. There’s even a small playground inside the aquarium as well! If you need snacks, there are a couple spots within the aquarium but we packed snacks and ate them on the patio while we watched the otters playing in the ocean kelp fields near the back of the aquarium. 

We also loved finding all sorts of fish throughout the aquarium including fish as big as my toddler, sharks, jellyfish and of course, NEMO!

Big Sur is breathtaking—but with young kids, we found it worked best as a series of shorter stops rather than an all-day adventure.

There’s a great viewpoint of the Bixby Bridge  and a secret swing, if you’re comfortable finding it. How to get there - we went down a little road into a parking lot for Rocky Point Restaurant and just off the trail (southwest from the parking lot) there was a little swing hidden!

McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

This is "that" world-famous, postcard-perfect 80-foot waterfall that drops directly onto a pristine sandy beach cove. It is arguably the most photographed spot in Big Sur, and the surreal turquoise water is absolutely breathtaking. The actual walk to the viewpoint is an incredibly flat, short, and stroller-friendly stroll (under a half-mile round trip) that goes through a fun tunnel underneath Highway 1—which toddlers love.

⚠️ Crucial Parent Tip: You cannot walk down to the beach or touch the waterfall; it is strictly off-limits to protect the cove and keep visitors safe from steep cliffs. Because the official Overlook Trail has faced long-term closures for a massive retaining wall repair project, parking inside the main lot is very limited. If the trail is blocked when you visit, don't worry! You can still pull over safely at the designated highway turnouts just north of the park entrance and get an incredible view of the waterfall straight from the side of Highway 1 without loading and unloading the stroller.

🏖️ Pfeiffer Beach and Keyhole Rock

• 📍Location: 9101 Sycamore Canyon Rd, Big Sur, CA 93920

Keyhole Rock has a “keyhole” arched opening that waves and rays of sunshine burst through, and it’s a popular spot for photographers to shoot.

The purple sand found on certain parts of the beach is produced from manganese garnet rocks in the cliffs. Other activities you can partake in include photography, walking the beach, and exploring the tide pools and dunes.

We stayed at the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort for a night and it was perfect. This hotel surprised us.

Our boys spent almost as much time on the giant oceanfront lawn as they did at the beach.

Favorite features:

• Beach volleyball

• Oceanfront rooms

• Complimentary cookies at check-in

• Easy beach access

• Firepits at night with S’mores kits available for purchase

There were cookies (and coffee) at the front desk which was a warm welcoming at check-in!

We booked a room with the ocean front view and it did not disappoint. There was an empty fridge and a mini fridge in our room. There was also a cute fireplace that we didn’t get a chance to use but certainly appreciated it.

Best Things to do with Kids

Elephant Seals along the California Coast is the perfect stop for kids along PCH

Just south of Ragged Point, don't miss one of our favorite free stops along the California coast—the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery.

Hundreds of northern elephant seals gather here throughout the year, so there's always a good chance you'll see them lounging on the beach. If you're visiting in January, May, or October, you'll likely catch even more activity as the colony goes through breeding, molting, and other seasonal behaviors.

These incredible marine mammals are fascinating to watch. Adult males can weigh several thousand pounds and are easy to recognize by their large, trunk-like noses that give elephant seals their name. Although they spend most of their lives far out in the Pacific. 

Did you miss the turn? Don’t fret, the Friends of the Elephant Seal’s website has a live webcam.

I wouldn’t take a tour with kids at Hearst Castle but I would visit the trucks! The 1920s Dodge Chemical Fire Truck

While most people who visit Hearst Castle Visitor Center go for a tour of the “castle” and grounds, we with energetic boys, seek trucks. If your toddler thinks historic architecture is boring but screams 'TRUCK!' at every passing vehicle, skip the long mansion tour and hang out at the free visitor center exhibit instead. There is a spectacular vintage fire truck and other historical transportation pieces, artifacts, and context-setting vehicle displays you can spot around the estate grounds: 

• The 1920s Dodge Chemical Fire Truck: This is the flagship vehicle centerpiece on display directly inside the Visitor Center museum exhibit. It was custom-purchased by William Randolph Hearst to protect the hilltop estate during construction.

• The Vintage Tour Buses: Though modern buses handle the daily tours, the Visitor Centerfeatures historical photographs and archival displays dedicated to the original white, open-air buses that transported high-society Hollywood stars up the "Enchanted Hill."

• Historic Ranch Equipment: In the free museum exhibition hall at the east end of the center, you can view archival photos and artifacts of the early steam-powered tractors, construction trucks, and cranes used by architect Julia Morgan to build the castle

The playground also features traditional swings, spinners, and animal-themed structures close to the ground, all set on a safe play surface conducive to active, cushioned exploration.
There is also a massive open grassy lawn adjacent to the play area for open running.

⚡️We stopped to charge our electric vehicle and found the cutest little town that looked like something out of a western movie or even Radiator Springs. 

Los Alamos looked like Radiator Springs to us and Bob's Well Bread Bakery was a delicious stop for breakfast with kids

Wonderful property located right across the street from the beach! I’ve stayed there a few times and even stayed there when I was a toddler! 

There’s a great pool, and giant checker boards for kids to play. There’s also a huge lawn for them to just run out energy! There are even fire pits to enjoy s’mores by at night. 

Our room was really spacious and felt like a suite! We had a balcony to sit and chat with a drink and dessert once the boys fell asleep. 

The hotel is walking distance from the Zoo or a super short drive!

If your kids have been cooped up in the car, Santa Monica is one of the best places along the California coast to let them burn off some energy before continuing your road trip.

One of our favorite options is to park near Santa Monica Place and head toward Palisades Park along Ocean Avenue. The wide grassy lawns, walking paths, and ocean views give little ones plenty of room to run while parents can enjoy one of the most beautiful stretches of the California coast.

If you're looking for a traditional playground, head to North Beach Playground (810 CA-1, Santa Monica, CA 90403). It's just steps from the beach and a perfect stop for toddlers and preschoolers who need to climb, slide, and play before getting back in the car.

One of our boys' favorite stops is the famous dinosaur fountains, where kids love watching the water spray while parents grab a coffee or browse the nearby stores. It's an easy stop that offers something for everyone.

The historic carousel is a favorite for little ones, and simply watching the roller coaster, Ferris wheel, surfers, and street performers is entertainment in itself.

Even if you don't ride any attractions, strolling to the end of the pier, spotting sea birds, and taking in the ocean views makes this a memorable stop for the whole family.

The Aquarium of the Pacific is one of Southern California's best aquariums and well worth the stop if you have the time. Kids can explore exhibits featuring sharks, penguins, jellyfish, and colorful tropical fish while learning about marine life from around the Pacific Ocean.

Toddlers and preschoolers especially enjoy the interactive exhibits and watching the animals swim overhead. Plan on spending at least a couple of hours here, although it's easy to stay even longer. We spent a lot of time watching the penguins!

🚢 Queen Mary

If you're traveling with toddlers, we'd recommend simply walking around the outside and snapping a few photos before heading to your next stop. Families with older kids may enjoy exploring the ship or taking one of its popular haunted tours.

Pool View at the Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach Resort

Carlsbad is an easy family-friendly stop on a Southern California road trip, especially if you’re heading to LEGOLAND. It has beaches, a major theme park, outlet shopping, and enough kid-friendly food stops to make it a great place to spend a night or two.

We originally booked Cape Rey because we were visiting LEGOLAND, but we ended up really enjoying the resort itself. It’s a great option for families who want to stay near the beach while still being an easy drive from Carlsbad’s main attractions.

The ocean views are beautiful, and the pool area gave the boys a chance to swim and reset after a busy day. They also had fun attempting a few rounds of cornhole. It felt relaxed and resort-like without needing to plan a whole separate beach vacation.

🍔🍦 Food Stop: In-N-Out Burger

This is an easy, reliable stop right off the freeway when everyone is hungry and you need to keep the day moving. Grab burgers, fries, and milkshakes (OBVIOUSLY), then get back on the road—or take your food to a nearby beach or park if the kids need a little more time out of the car.

LEGOLAND is the main reason many families stop in Carlsbad, and it is especially fun for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-age kids. The park has rides, LEGO-building areas, character experiences, and plenty of themed spaces that make it feel exciting without being quite as overwhelming as some of the larger Southern California theme parks.

For younger kids, plan to arrive early and start with the rides that have shorter lines in the morning. There are also plenty of shaded spots, snack stands, and places to take a break when everyone needs a reset. If you have the time, the water park can be a fun add-on on a warm day, but the main park alone is enough for a full day.

Parent Tip: Bring a stroller or rent one, even if your child does not normally use one. There is a lot of walking, and it makes it easier to stay through the afternoon without ending the day with overtired kids.

The Flower Fields are typically open for a limited spring season, so check current dates before building them into your itinerary. They are close to LEGOLAND and the outlets, which makes this area especially easy to plan as a full Carlsbad day.

Just North of the Hilton and golf course, you’ll find the Torrey Pines State National Reserve. We brought our baby carrier and went for a little beach hike!

There are quite a few trails ranging from 100 yards to 1.2 miles. We took the Beach Trail which was 3/4 mile to the beach but it involved a 350-foot descent and climb. The final beach entry is steep but has stairs.

Make sure you check the tide tables if you plan on going down to the beach, there isn’t a huge beachfront.

🏖️ La Jolla Cove and Children’s Pool

SeaWorld was one of my favorite stops as a kid, and I cannot wait to experience it again with my own boys. It’s a fun choice for families who want a mix of marine animals, shows, rides, and splashy play areas all in one place. I love the Seal and Otter show!

For toddlers and preschoolers, I would focus on the animal exhibits, gentler rides, and play areas rather than trying to do everything. Pack extra clothes or swimsuits if your kids are drawn to water play, and plan a slower afternoon break if you are staying all day. We would live in the penguin exhibit if we could! 🐧

🦁 San Diego Zoo⁠

The San Diego Zoo is one of those classic family attractions that really lives up to the hype. It is huge, so don’t put pressure on yourself to see every animal in one day. Pick a few must-see animals, use the stroller, and leave room for snacks and breaks.

For younger kids, make time for Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, which has animal encounters, hands-on play spaces, and a splash area. It is one of the best parts of the zoo for toddlers and preschoolers.

Parent Tip: The zoo is inside Balboa Park, so you can pair it with a picnic, carousel ride, or another kid-friendly museum—but I would not try to add too much on the same day. The zoo alone is plenty.

🦒 San Diego Zoo Safari Park⁠

It is farther inland and involves a lot of walking, so I would choose it as a separate full-day adventure—not a quick add-on. Bring a stroller, water, and sun protection, especially with toddlers.

🌳 Balboa Park⁠

Balboa Park is worth visiting even if you skip the zoo. There are gardens, wide paths, grassy areas, museums, a carousel, a miniature train, and plenty of space for kids to move around. It is an especially good lower-key day after a theme park or beach day.

For young kids, I would look at the Fleet Science Center⁠ for hands-on exhibits or the  San Diego Model Railroad Museum⁠ if your kids are into trains. Fast forward to today, and we're exploring Surf City with two high-energy little boys who don't nap and need constant activity to avoid a complete meltdown.

Santa Cruz turned out to be one of our favorite California family destinations because there is so much to do within a short drive.

The Redwood Grove Loop Trail is flat, easy for little legs, and stroller-friendly. The giant redwood trees are impressive even for young kids.

Parent tip: Turn the hike into a scavenger hunt and see if your kids can spot a Banana Slug. Ours became completely determined to find one and it kept them engaged for the entire walk. We found several Banana Slugs around 10:00 a.m. while the forest was still cool and damp. Check around the bases of large redwood trees where it's shady and moist.

If you have active kids who need constant stimulation to avoid a meltdown, Santa Cruz is an absolute playground. Because our boys don't nap, we packed our schedule full of redwoods, roller coasters, and beach days. Here is our exact, tried-and-tested 3-day Santa Cruz itinerary for active families.

Day 1: Tacos, Tide Air, & Twilight Mini Golf

1:00 PM – Land at San Jose Airport (SJC): Grab your rental car or bags. The drive from SJC to Santa Cruz takes about 45 minutes winding through the scenic Highway 17.

2:00 PM – Check-In at Hyatt Place Santa Cruz: We chose this as our base camp because it’s centrally located and offers crucial perks for families (more on that in our hotel review!).

3:00 PM – Neptune’s Kingdom at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk: Skip the big roller coasters on arrival day if the kids are tired from travel, and head straight for a 10-minute walk to the boardwalk. We played 18 holes of pirate-themed mini golf at Neptune’s Kingdom.

Tip for parents: A few of the holes glow in the dark, which is a massive hit for high-stimulation kids.

6:00 PM – Beachside Dinner at El Hermoso Mar: Instead of a formal sit-down restaurant, grab quick tacos and quesadillas here. Walk your food over to the Aloha Terrace Group Picnic Area. It’s the perfect spot to watch boats sail by and beach volleyball games while the kids burn off their remaining energy running in the sand.

7:00 PM – Walk Back & Wind Down: Walk back to the Hyatt Place to start the bedtime routine before day two.

Day 2: Redwoods, Steam Trains, & Marine Life

8:00 AM – Fuel Up: Take advantage of the free hot breakfast at the hotel to save time and money.

9:00 AM – Hike Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park: Head inland to the mountains (about a 15-20 minute drive). Do the Redwood Grove Loop Trail. It’s completely flat, stroller-friendly, and lets the kids climb inside massive, hollowed-out Redwood trees.

Active Kid Challenge: Challenge your kids to spot a Banana Slug 🐌 on the forest floor. It kept our boys completely locked in and hunting along the trail!

10:30 AM – Roaring Camp Railroads: Right next door to the park is Roaring Camp. We hopped on the authentic steam train for a ride through the mountain forest. It’s loud, exciting, and highly engaging for kids who love trains

12:30 PM – Lunch at Georgie’s Cook House: Located right inside Roaring Camp. Expect theme-park pricing, but it's convenient: it cost us about $40 for a standard kid-friendly spread of chicken nuggets, hot dogs, hamburgers, and fries.

2:00 PM – Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center: Head back down to the beach. This center features interactive exhibits, and admission is completely free.

Note: They close at 4:00 PM, so make sure you don't arrive too late!

3:30 PM – Stroll the Santa Cruz Wharf: Walk right outside the exploration center onto the historic wharf to look for sunbathing sea lions barking under the pier.

When you have toddlers, quick food options are a lifesaver and while this wasn’t the best hotel breakfast we’ve ever had, it absolutely worked for busy mornings.

Breakfast options during our stay included:

• Fruit Loops and Cheerios for the kids

• Eggs

• Breakfast potatoes (hash browns or diced potatoes depending on the day)

• Sausage or bacon

• French toast, waffles, or pancakes

• Donut holes

• Bagels and toast

• Yogurt and granola

• Fresh fruit

Sometimes you just need food immediately with little ones and this definitely made mornings easier.

The pool area was another big hit for families.

Amenities included:

• Heated pool

• Spa / hot tub

• Outdoor rinse shower before heading back to your room

• Evening fire pits

• S’mores kits available for purchase

One note for families with little swimmers: the pool appeared to be under 5 feet deep, which felt very kid-friendly.

Spacious Rooms Make a Huge Difference with Toddlers

One thing we loved most was how spacious our room felt.

Our boys are in that awkward phase where they’re too big for cribs but we don’t trust them on tall hotel beds yet, so we travel with our Rigalo Toddler Inflatable beds.

Sometimes hotel rooms feel cramped once we set them up, but our room at Hyatt Place Santa Cruz felt huge.

We stayed in Room 331, which had a wider layout (some rooms appear longer and narrower).

The extra width gave us room for:

• Two toddler beds

• Walking space around them

• Storage space when not in use

• Enough open floor area that the boys could literally do cartwheels

We also had a slight view of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and even a small peek of the ocean in the distance.

My favorite part of the room was the cozy couch nook! there is an “L” shaped pull out couch sofa with a lamp overhead creating a cute little nook where we sat and read bedtime stories. I had the boys snuggle up and we read a few of our favorite books we packed including The Trucks that Saved the Park!

We loved the location of the Hyatt Place Santa Cruz because it was close to the boardwalk while also being within easy driving distance of several toddler activities.

Things to Do Near Hyatt Place Santa Cruz with Kids

San Lorenzo Park

Location: 137 Dakota Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95060

We walked less than 10 mins to the San Lorenzo Park that had a cute playground! It had lots of structures to climb and burn out some kid afternoon energy. There was

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Location: 400 Beach St, Santa Cruz, CA 95060

The hotel is about a 15-minute walk to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

That said, personally I’m not sure I would choose to walk back after dark with little kids.

We drove and found parking by the boardwalk for $5 midweek in May 2026.

The valet mentioned nearby lots can reach around $30, especially on weekends.

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park

Location: 101 N Big Trees Park Rd, Felton, CA 95018

One of our favorite stops was the flat Redwood Grove Loop Trail at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.

It was only about 15 minutes from the hotel and perfect for toddlers.

The loop is approximately one mile, mostly flat, and stroller friendly.

Ride the Roaring Camp Train Through the Redwoods

Location: 5401 Graham Hill Rd, Felton, CA 95018

Right next to the redwoods is Roaring Camp Railroads.

They offer train rides through the redwoods (we saw departures twice daily during our visit).

We were also told the Beach Train connecting the boardwalk and redwoods is beautiful, though it can be slower because it travels through town and stops frequently at crossings and intersections.

Final Thoughts: Is Hyatt Place Santa Cruz Worth It for Families?

For families traveling with toddlers and young kids, Hyatt Place Santa Cruz worked really well for us.

The highlights were definitely:

✔ Heated pool and fire pits
✔ Close to the Boardwalk
✔ Easy access to toddler activities like Henry Cowell and Roaring Camp

If you're all about convenience (and who isn't when wrangling little ones?), the Clement Monterey's location is practically a superhero! Nestled right on the breathtaking Monterey Bay, this elegant hotel is literally a two-minute stroll from the bustling charm of Cannery Row, where you can find everything from quirky shops to delicious eateries. Feeling a bit more adventurous? Fisherman's Wharf, with its clam chowder delights and barking sea lions, is just a mile away.And for those who dream of pristine greens and ocean views, the iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links is a mere six miles down the road. But the real cherry on top for families? You're literally steps away from the magnificent Monterey Bay Aquarium! Prepare for your tiny marine biologists to lose their minds (in the best possible way, of course).

The Lobby: Where Grandeur Meets Giggle-Inducing Details

First impressions? The lobby at the Clement Monterey is a whole vibe. The check-in desk is conveniently tucked away with the elevators just across the hall (super handy for the hotel hosts, but also for you when your toddlers are doing their "let's push all the buttons" routine). But the real magic happens just around the corner.

There's this absolutely gorgeous area with a cozy fireplace and comfy couches. It's the perfect spot to sip your Nespresso (from your room, naturally) and watch the water, patiently wait for your significant other to finally emerge from the bathroom, or even, as we discovered, have an impromptu pizza party with your tiny humans!

Off the lobby was a patio with tables and chairs, some even had firepits, AND best of all…CORNHOLE! It was entertainment for at least 20 minutes and a place for the kiddos to run around. We even saw whales in the distance and otters below the deck.

But my absolute favorite part of the entire hotel? The staircase just off the back of the lobby. It's a total showstopper! Inspired by the nearby aquarium, there's this incredible fixture that looks like a giant jellyfish gracefully changing colors. And with the shimmering lights, you genuinely feel like you're underwater. It's quirky, it's mesmerizing, and it's definitely worth a photo op (or three!).

Your Room: Where Spaciousness Meets Serenity (Seriously!)

Spacious Gust Rooms at the Intercontinental Monterey Bay

Prepare to have your mind (and your claustrophobia) blown! The guest rooms here are so ridiculously spacious, you could probably host a small-scale toddler dance party without anyone tripping over furniture. Those high ceilings and massive windows aren't just for show; they let in all the good vibes and keep those "walls closing in" feelings at bay. Some rooms even have fireplaces!

And then there's the zen corner. No, really. They've got a tiny bonsai tree and a little Zen sand garden to help you achieve peak relaxation. Because after a day of chasing toddlers, who doesn't need a moment of inner peace? Plus, the fridge/mini-bar is just big enough to stash a few emergency juice boxes or that leftover gourmet burrito you snuck from breakfast. Priorities, right?

Oh, and the bathroom? It's ginormous! We're talking separate shower and a tub big enough to actually soak in (if your kids ever let you). And the towels were large bath sheets and felt like brand-new, fluffy, warm hugs after a long day. Most hotel towels are stiff and small. The body products smell delightful without making you feel like you just bathed in a perfume factory.

Alright, let's talk mini bar. In a world full of sad, empty hotel fridges, the Clement Monterey decided to be different. They actually had snacks and drinks! (Gasp!) Now, don't get me wrong, it's not a full-blown grocery store, but there was enough wiggle room to stash a few of your own emergency juice boxes or, you know, that leftover gourmet burrito from breakfast. Because priorities.

Pool & Fitness: More Like a (Very Pretty) Pond and a Spa for Grown-Ups!

Okay, let's be honest, the "pool" is more like a charming, oversized fountain that could comfortably fit about four adults (or, let's be real, two adults and a handful of splashy toddlers). But hey, it's pretty AND WARM! It's located on the second floor, right across from the fitness center, which means you can pretend you're going to work out, then sneak over to the pool for a quick dip instead. The spa, however, is a different story – it's big enough for six adults to soak their worries away. Just imagine!

The C Restaurant Dining Room

The C Restaurant + Bar: Where Tiny Hands Meet Gourmet Delights

This place is seriously cute and upscale, with stunning views overlooking the bay. We hit them up for both breakfast and dinner, and let me tell you, everything was delicious! Beyond the typical breakfast fare, they've got some intriguing seafood breakfast options and a gourmet breakfast burrito that'll make your taste buds sing.

And for the little ones? They have a kids' menu! My tiny food critics devoured their pancakes – four fluffy, palm-sized pancakes each. Because apparently, little hands need big pancake portions.

Now, for the main event: dessert. Because, of course, we had dessert. We indulged in the Milk & Honey Toast ($18), which was basically buttery brioche, dreamy milk ice cream, crunchy honeycomb candy, and a dollop of strawberry guava jam. And then there was The Chocolate Bar ($18), a decadent symphony of chocolate ganache, peanut butter crunch, salted caramel, sesame brittle, and a sprinkle of Maldon Salt. Did I take pictures of them in the bathroom because the tots were finally sleeping? You bet your sweet tooth I did!

There is also a full spa if you want to get your massage on. Mama didn’t have time this trip, but next time will be a different story. Hubs can play Pebble Beach as long as Mom gets a spa day!

CLOTHING TO PACK FOR A WEEKEND IN NAPA

1. Dresses - I love wearing short dresses around the wineries and to maxi dresses to dinner. During Winter, I pack cute sweaters for the day and maybe a dress for a fancy dinner.

2. Stay Warm - For mornings and cooler nights bring a sweater or three. During Winter, it can get to 50 degrees during the day and even cooler at night; so I’d pack a cute coat!

3. Workout Clothes - If you need to sweat it out! Some great scenery to run around Napa or hit the hotel gym.

4. Sneakers - great to have if you’re walking around or going on adventures

5. Plane Outfit - I love a good oversized top and leggings.

6. Basics - Socks, Underwear, Bras, Sports Bras, PAJAMAS!

7. Small Purse - to hold an ID, Credit card, cash, phone, lipstick, gum and maybe a car key

8. Accessories/Jewelry - Earrings, Necklace, Bracelet, Watch

9. Bubble wrap or a travel wine bag - If you think you will be purchasing some wine, bring some bubble wrap or something to put wine in and then pack the wine in the middle of your suitcase on your way home with your clothes protecting the bottles. You’ll have to check the bag if you’re flying with wine. Pro TIp: If you sign up for a wine club at the winery, you can add your favorite wines you sampled that day and have them ship with your first order.

What not to pack: DON’T OVERPACK! Plan your outfits ahead of time and see what you can mix and match or get away with packing just 1 extra pair of shoes! Everything should fit in a carry-on. Don’t pack a wine opener with a small blade for the foil - I speak from experience.

WINE TASTING DAY ESSENTIALS

1. Comfortable Footwear - Summer is warm with a breeze, Fall and Spring can go either way, Winter can be cold and rainy. No matter when you go, cute and comfortable shoes are always a great idea.

2. Sunglasses - Sojo Sunglasses on Amazon are budget-friendly, great quality, and trendy!

3. Camera - Napa Valley is picturesque, take it all in and take a photo!

4. Compact Travel Umbrella - Northern California is often rainy! Check the weather in Napa before you go!

5. Water Bottle - Stay hydrated! Collapsable bottles are great!

6. Snacks - We like to have granola bars, gummi bears, and M&M’s on hand for the car, in the room, or just to enjoy with some wine!

7. Cute tote or purse - You’ll need something to hold the above. If you have a designated driver, bring a small purse, and leave some things in the car!

What not to pack: Don’t bring your make-up bag, tons of lotions, or heavy things in your bag. Your day will typically consist of walking around or standing, don’t put too many things in your purse.

1. Basics - Shampoo, Conditioner, Shower Gel (if you prefer your own, most hotels have these)

2. Deodorant - Might be considered a basic, but something you really don’t want to forget!

3. Sunblock - We like to walk the vineyards or sit on a patio, protect your skin!

4. First Aid - I pack a few bandaids, Neosporin, aspirin… just in case (so much wine)!

5. Manicure Set - Manicure scissors (small TSA friendly ones), Nail clipper, tweezers, small nail file

Napa is located about 2 hours North of San Francisco and is considered part of wine country in Northern California. I LOVE WINE which makes it very difficult to figure out where to go in Napa since there are so many great options!

These Napa Valley wineries were selected not only for their great wine but also for their picture-perfect settings and scenic vineyard views — ideal for travelers who want more than just a tasting flight, but Instagram-worthy experiences and unforgettable landscapes.

Mumm Champagne is one of my favorites and the winery with vineyard views didn’t disappoint. I loved my visit and tasting so much, I even joined their wine club. The grounds are beautiful and the staff is very friendly. I can't wait to come back again and again! 

We walked up around 11a without a reservation and were seated immediately. Since it was December and on the cooler side, we opted to sit in the salon for our tasting.

Although this is more of a popular brand name, I had to include it because it’s my favorite!

I was excited for Hall since they specialize in Cabernet Sauvignon, winning many awards for their 100 point cabs! Also, not going to lie, I love bunny foo foo, especially when he is holding a light saber (Star Wars was released in theaters that weekend). Speaking of, they had amazing art throughout the winery, in the gardens, in the tasting room, everywhere!

This vineyard had more of a modern flair with an artistic eye, making it more unique. Their tasting bar was setup on the second floor near floor to ceiling windows with spectacular vineyard views. And we witnessed another beautiful sunset..

LARKMEAD VINEYARDS WINERY - Unique Winery in Napa Valley

• Food?: Not that I could see, just lots of wine!

Their website says it best: "Surrounded by the serenity of our beautiful vineyard, each visit to Larkmead is personal and unique. Guests enjoy a private guided tour of the winery followed by an in-depth tasting with a dedicated member of our team. Our cellar library holds over 2,000 bottles spanning two centuries." Their cabernets were smooth and rich (and perfect).

Wine is served in fancy Zalto glasses which run about $75 a pop!

CASTELLO Di AMOROSA - Scenic Winery Castle in Napa

• Cost?: $$$ Starts at $45 just to get into the castle and comes with a tasting. Designated Drivers also need to pay an entrance fee, even if they aren't drinking! There are guided tours and food pairings as well.

• Food?: Yes, see the Royal Pairings Menu

• Kid Friendly! It is $25 for kids to join but they will be entertained!

This 13th Century Tuscan inspired castle is picture perfect scenery for a winery! You can visit the knight’s hall and their flagship cabernet sauvignon is a must-try. Animals from goats to chickens surround the castle, including some gorgeous peacocks! Not something you see every day in Napa.

The French Chateau esthetic at Domaine Carneros is utterly breathtaking! Walking up through the garden among the waterfalls feels like you galavanted across the world to a European vineyard! We made a reservation in advance and were seated right away. I love Champagne and the sparkling wine here was to die for. Since it was my birthday, the waiter was so kind to bring out a bottle of their best reserve wine, Le Reve, and give us a taste!

• Food?: From house-cured salumi and slow braised meats to vegetables from their garden and Grandma Dee’s handmade ravioli, Chef Joshua and the entire culinary team collaborate on a unique menu that embodies the season and pairs perfectly with the wines.

The tasting was more expensive than other vineyards, but it included cheese, bread and olive oil! I highly recommend venturing into their gorgeous Venetian caves known as the tour with barrel tasting. Check out that chandelier! The tasting room is beautiful decked out with venetian paintings, tiling, marble pillars and expensive wines making it the prettiest winery in Napa!

San Francisco is such a great city! We've been so many times, yet there is something new to do every time. With all the hills and located on the coast, there are spectacular views! We love being a tourist and they have some pretty great food there too! Here is a list of our FAVORITE things to do in San Francisco:

1. Ride a Cable Car

I always think of Full House when I see the cable cars. Your trip would not be complete without a ride on these guys! There are three cable car lines: the Powell-Hyde Line, the Powell-Mason Line and the California Line. There's even a cable car museum! It's about $7 to take a ride. 2. See the Painted Ladies

Address: Steiner St, San Francisco, CA 94117

Check out these iconic brightly colored Victorian beauties. Alamo Square Park, located directly across from the ladies, is the perfect spot to sit and enjoy them! If you're not singing the theme song to Full House in front of these houses, there is something wrong with you. Speaking of, the actual Full House house is located: 1709 Broderick Street, about a mile away. We walked to the Mrs. Doubtfire house instead see #10.

3. Check Out Alcatraz  

This famous prison is in the middle of the bay, once home to Al Capone. Make sure you buy your tickets a couple weeks in advance, the earlier you go, the less crowds there are. Day tickets to The Rock are only $45, including the ferry to get there and the self guided audio tour. I dare you to try the night tour! Buy tickets here: Alcatraz Tours or Viator offers great bundles and you can get into Alcatraz and the Aquarium for $63!

4. Visit Lombard Street

5. Visit the Sea Lions at Fisherman's Wharf - Pier 39

Grab a bite to eat, do some shopping and then come see these guys! There are hundreds of sea lions at times, swimming, barking, and splashing. I could sit and watch them for hours!

6. Visit the Golden Gate Bridge

You can drive, bike, and even walk across this massive bridge, or enjoy from a beach nearby. Any way you choose, you can appreciate the beauty of this iconic art deco bridge. 7. Walk through the Palace of Fine Arts

Take a walk through the Palace of Fine Arts walking distance from the Crissy Fields beach in #7! Appreciate the Greco-Roman architecture and lookout for turtles and ducks!

8. Get Ice Cream and Sit in the Park

Bi-Rite is one of the best ice cream establishments in San Francisco. There is always a wait, but it is well worth it. Dolores Park is right across the street, which is a great place to enjoy city views and have some ice cream. The park isn’t always so crowded, it had rained all week and it was a warm beautiful day!

9. Go Shopping in Union Square

Shopping is one of my favorite activities and Union Square has some of the best stores: Macy's, Saks 5th Ave, Tiffany & Co, Nike, Apple, Williams-Sonoma, to name a few. Stop at the Burger Bar in Macy’s for Union Square views and a milkshake! If you go down Powell there are even more shops and a mall off of Market Street.

10. Find the Mrs. Doubtfire House

Although the big distributers such as Kendall Jackson or Mumm are some of my favorite, I also like to look for wineries that aren’t as mainstream, that might have a nice view, and great wine. FAMILY OWNED: The Chappellet Family

The Chappellet Family has owned the land on Pritchard Hill for 50 years and have pioneered their way to grow crops at a higher elevation and produce a luscious red wine. Dated back 4 million years, the area was once occupied by a 14,000 foot volcano! Over time and much erosion, the area has sculpted into what it is today with dramtic slopes and rocky volcanic soils. Rising between 800 to 1,800 feet with a variety of different exposures and soil types, the Chappellets along with the help fo David Pirio (vineyard manager) have worked hard to perfect farming techniques as well as practicing environmentally conscious farming methods. In 2012, Chappellet Vineyard was awarded organic certification from California Certified Organic Farmers.

Donn and Molly moved their family to Pritchard Hill in 1967 after discovering the beautiful vista views and an opportunity to make a living off of the land. The tasting room and production end are in a triangular shaped building that looks like it was built into a hill. The structure inside was upholstered and decorated with the most beautiful wood.

Today, their children Cyril, Carissa and Dominic Chappellet, now oversee the day-to-day operations. Cyril and Dominic deal with the management and logistics of business, where as Carissa is a lawyer as well as an artist, overseeing all legal affairs of the company as well as applying some of her artistic talents. She loved to draw dragons as a child, and wanted them to be put on wine labels. Donn told her that dragons didn’t have anything to do with the winery, so Carissa wrote her own book about the Dragons of Pritchard Hill.

Every year wine club members look forward to a new dragon design with a story to go with it on the back of the label!

RED, RED WINE

If you like red wine, THIS IS YOUR PLACE! The Chappellets were inspired to create a world-class wine such as a Bordeaux. Of the vineyard’s 102 planted acres, approximately 65 are Cabernet Sauvignon, with the remainder consisting of small blocks of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Chenin Blanc.

Chappellet's extensive 90-minute Vineyard Tour and Tasting includes a walk through the organic vineyards and a seated tasting of new releases. As I mentioned, it was POURING down rain so we got a quick tour of the facility and had a lovely tasting. Theo was our guide and she was unbelievable! So knowledgeable about the process and the Chappellet family, she really made the tour fun and interesting.

We started with their 2014 Signature Chardonnay which had a creamy texture instead of the buttery oak taste I was expecting. Aromas of citrus and apricot went well with the notes of sweet oak and spice.

Then we proceeded through the bottle processing area to where the wine is stored and aged!

Here Theo thoroughly explained how they cultivate and store wine, sprinkling in details of the land and environmentally conscious farming methods, as I had previous mentioned. We would have taken a tour of the vineyards but it was too wet and muddy so we moved into the tasting room.

We tried a few amazing wines in here including:

• 2013 Chappellet Napa Valley Zinfandel - aromas of ripe berry, fig & plum, and layered black pepper, sage, cedar & briary spice. Very nice and smooth for a Zin! I loved the pepper taste to it, leaving a very earthy flavor to it.

• 2014 Chappellet Napa Vallet Malbec - aromas of cherry, creme de cassis and anise, with French oak-inspired hints of clove and nutmeg. On the palate wild berry, grenadine, chocolate and coffee.

• 2015 Chappellet Napa Valley Las Piedras - aromas of black cherry and cassis with a palate of dark berry, plum, and cedar. This was my favorite of them all! As a blend of 55% Cabernet, 20% Malbec, and a mix of Petit Verdof, Cab Franc, and Merlot, IT WAS PERFECT! Definitely ordering more bottles.

The art around the winery was so unique and beautiful. Most of the art was painted by the family or hand picked by the family.

There are so many options when looking at Napa and Sonoma for wine tasting it’s overwhelming! I’ve been to Napa quite a few times and there is always a new place to discover and tons of wine to try! We went to Scribe on our last trip and it was divine! Food was served, wine was poured, good times were had by all!

With a drive-way lined with palm trees, this is a true California vineyard! A beautiful house sits atop the property with a fabulous patio to enjoy wine along with a few courses AND a stunning view! Inside, the house was so cute and chic, looking like it came straight out of a home and garden magazine.

ABOUT SCRIBE

The history of the winery is interesting. The winery was founded in 2007 on a property that pioneered pre-prohibition Sonoma Valley winemaking. As stated in their About section on their website:

Managed by fourth-generation California farmers and brothers, Andrew and Adam believe that the best wines are a result of a healthy relationship between man and nature, and that a vineyard managed in harmony with the greater ecosystem results in more site-specific wines that represent a sense of time and place. When vinified with non-interventionist methods, the result is a distinct wine that faithfully reflects what the vineyard naturally expresses.

FOOD AND WINE

Scribe was on my list of wineries to visit last year but for the price of the tasting it seemed too expensive. Wrong! Not only do they have generous pours, but a delightful meal that goes along with the tasting at cute picnic tables.  

Scribe is known to produce vibrant, terroir-driven wines, my favorite wine was the estate Chardonnay, not too buttery and rich, but refreshing.

For $60 per person, we tried the Hacienda Menu including 4 wines paired with the perfect food. We started with olives, almonds and radishes with our first course. We were pleasantly upgraded with a second course including salad, then a third course with a chicken dish and focaccia bread!

The wines were pricey, but we did get a bottle of their sparkling wine and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. 

We’ll definitely be back!

San Francisco is known for many things and ice cream is definitely one of them. One of the most popular ice cream destinations is Bi-Rite Creamery. Part of the Bi-Rite family, the Bi-Rite Market opened in 1940 and eventually opened their own creamery in 2006. They serve homemade organic ice cream and also have a soft serve window. We went on a warm day in February and the line was about 20 mins long wrapping around the street corner. Go with cool friends, it makes the line go faster.

Once you take a step inside, it's very small, the ice cream freezer case is right there, but the faces behind the counter are warm and friendly! See all flavors here: MENU

They not only make the ice cream in house, they also have a bakery attached and make all brownies, marshmallows, toffee in the ice cream. They also make toppings such as peanut brittle and hot fudge. If you're lactose intolerant, don't worry, you can join in on the fun too, they offer a vegan, dairy-free ice cream daily! SO MANY OPTIONS!

Happiness is definitely one scoop at a time.

I took my delicious coffee toffee, Cookies & Cream, chocolate cone and decided to eat it in the park across the street. I texture had the perfect balance of creamy and soft. My favorite was the cookies and cream. I tried the rose, salted caramel, and a peanut butter fudge type.

Since it was so warm, my friends and I walked across the street and decided to enjoy our ice cream, and the views, from Dolores Park.

We love visiting Sonoma and Napa but are always overwhelmed by where to go in our short time we are there! So many wineries, so little time! What is the most picturesque winery? Which winery has the best wine? Is Sonoma far from Napa? It can get confusing, so let me give you a little tour! Also, I suggest you check out the 7 Best Kept Secret Wineries in Napa! Sonoma County borders Napa County and encompasses Sonoma, Santa Rosa, and Russian River Valley. See the google map below!

We knew we wanted to stop in Santa Rosa to go to the Russian River Brew Company, so we decided to spend the night at the Hyatt Regency Sonoma on Friday night so that we could have a full day in wine country! 

From Santa Rosa, there are 2 ways to get to Napa:

1. Up the 101 through Russian River and come around via the 128 through Yountville, Callistoga, and Rutherford.

or

2. Drive through Sonoma on the 12. Either way, you will find wine, see our favorite wineries in Sonoma County!

With a drive-way lined with palm trees, this is a true California vineyard! A beautiful house sits atop the property with a fabulous patio to enjoy wine along with a few courses AND a stunning view! Inside, the house was so cute and chic, looking like it came straight out of a home and garden magazine. 

Scribe Wine was on my list of wineries to visit last year but for the price of the tasting it seemed too expensive. Wrong! Not only do they have generous pours, but a delightful meal that goes along with the tasting.  

My favorite wine was the estate Chardonnay, not too buttery and rich, but refreshing.

For $60 per person, we tried the Hacienda Menu including 4 wines paired with the perfect food. We started with olives, almonds and radishes with our first course. We were pleasantly upgraded with a second course including salad, then a third course with a chicken dish and focaccia bread!

The wines were pricey, but we did get a bottle of their sparkling wine and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. 

I would definitely go back to this one!

Not only fun to say but great wine too! Call it GunBun for short!

We had some time to kill before our tasting at Scribe, so we stopped at GunBun right next door, no appointment required. It’s the oldest family owned vineyard by 6 generations and is bonded winery #64 in California. They know what they're doing here. 

Kathryn, our wine hostess, was lovely and went into great depth of the history of the vineyard and its founders. With 320 acres, the grounds were gorgeous and they even have cave tours seasonally ($45 per person). 

Specialties included more red wines, we especially liked the Cabernet and Malbec best, but also really enjoyed the cuvée as a bonus tasting! If it had been a tad warmer, we would have loved to sit on the patio.

HOTEL REVIEW: Hyatt Regency Sonoma County

I love our annual trip to Napa for my birthday weekend! It’s a great way to relax and enjoy some tasty wine. Having a Hyatt Credit Card gives us an annual free night and spending it in Napa is definitely the way to go. We fly into Oakland on a Friday and drive to Santa Rosa to stay at the Hyatt Regency Sonoma County.

When staying in Sonoma, the Hyatt Regency Sonoma County is the best place to stay. Located in the heart of Santa Rosa, this Hyatt is not far from wineries and walking distance to many restaurants and shopping areas. Most importantly, it is a quick 5 minute drive from Russian River Brewery, our favorite place to stop for good brews! I know it’s wine country and I love it all, but this brewery is one of the best!

Lobby

The lobby has a rustic outdoor chic decor with shovels above the fireplace and wooden sticks holding up lamps. In December, a beautiful Christmas tree is placed in the middle of the lobby for all to see and admire! Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree…

Also, coffee is available in the morning but in the afternoons there was usually Apple Cider or Hot Cocoa out for guests (free of charge)! Such a great perk!

Just off the lobby is the patio with an enormous fire pit, perfect to enjoy a glass of wine from the vineyard you stopped at that day. ;-) This is the view for most rooms, there isn’t much of a view otherwise!

Bedroom

The rooms are a decent size for 2 people with a very clean and modern design. I love that there are outlets EVERYWHERE and even USB ports to charge almost anything. Your standard amenities were available: safe, big TV, iron, and mini bar. The room is fairly quiet, you can hear people in the hall if they are talking by your front door, but it wasn’t too noisy.

Had a nice sized closet for a weekend stay! I always think it’s weird when they put the hair dryer in the closet!

Bathroom

The bathroom renovation makes the bathroom feel twice as big with their fresh design. With a standing shower and a sink in the corner, this bathroom had all the space I needed.

Nothing makes me happier than a nail file! I ALWAYS need one!

Best Room at Cabernet House - Starry Night Room

We chose the room, Starry Night, which had a skylight above our bed! At night we saw the stars and even the moon orbit from window to window! 

There was also a patio that had a jacuzzi tub. Not a whirlpool jacuzzi, a bath tub. Weird, right? 

We probably would have used it if it wasn't 40 degrees outside. Speaking of bathtubs, the bathroom had a footed tub with an old fashioned toilet where you pulled a lever to flush! 

I loved this room, I would definitely stay in here again!

Bella Tuscany Room

The house had multiple bedrooms upstairs, but there were only 3 bedrooms downstairs. It was perfect, our friends picked the Bella Tuscany Room and it happened to be right across from us. 

Decorated with an Italian flair including some fine Tuscan accents, this room was a fairly good size! But it also had a bathtub in the middle of the room. Again, weird, right?

But these hedges and doors were adorable! This room had very little natural light, but was fine for a quick night stay!

Common Areas

Since this is a bed and breakfast that used to house a family (see the history toward the bottom of this page), it is basically a large house with the works including a family room, dining room and kitchen. Since we went in December, it was decorated for Christmas and felt like home!

There was fresh coffee in the morning and hot water for french presses, hot cocoa, or tea available 24/7.

Breakfast Served at Cabernet House

Served from 8:30-10am

For breakfast, we waltzed out in our sweats and socks and sat at the dining room table. There were a couple of ladies who had prepared the food and were serving the dishes. It was almost like a restaurant except everyone gets the same thing. I grabbed a coffee and when I came back to my seat a place setting was setup for me. Minutes later, one of the ladies brought me a plate that had an egg souffle, a cranberry muffin, and fresh fruit. DELICIOUS!

Happy Hour

The inn hosted a wine and cheese party at happy hour in their wine cellar from 5:30-6:30pm at their main location, Hotel Napa Valley, featuring local Napa wines. As we were finishing up, the power went out. Not creepy at all when you’re alone with your friends in a dark basement. Emergency lights lead us to the first floor and we discovered the whole block was out! 

Extras!

1. For a small fee, the Cabernet House can provide massages in your room, wine, flowers, and even offer breakfast in bed!

2. Room service hours are from 8:45-10:00am and from 3:00-11:00pm.

3. At 7:30pm, small handmade chocolate nibbles (made from Ghirardelli and Callebaut dark chocolates) are provided until they run out!

Parking in Napa

There was a parking lot in the back but there weren't any spots available. Luckily, there was a ton of street parking and we parked right in front.

History of the Cabernet House

This hotel is rich in Napa history! Per the Cabernet House website, it was built in 1906 by E. W. Doughty, a master craftsman responsible for building many of Napa’s landmark homes and churches, including the Noyes Mansion, current home of Wine Spectator Magazine. Doughty also built Napa’s library and train stations. Many of his buildings still stand more than 110 years later, a testament to Doughty’s skill and expertise. 

Doughty built it to house his family and as such, it is a classic contractor’s home, full of rich architectural detailing he could show to potential clients. 

In the 1970's, a spa tub builder added a few spas in the shape of grapes and years later her actually purchased the house! He began the extensive restoration and renovation to convert the home into one of Napa Valley’s very first bed and breakfast inns.

One of the inn’s first guests back in 1980 was Paul Newman, who stayed here when he raced his cars at Sears Point.
