We’ve visited some incredible aquariums with our kids, including Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. So when we were planning our Maui vacation, I honestly wasn’t sure we needed to spend more money visiting another aquarium.
Then we got lucky: another family at our hotel was leaving and had two Maui Ocean Center tickets they couldn’t use. We decided to go, and I am SO glad we did!
Our boys were 3 and 5 at the time, and they absolutely LOVED Maui Ocean Center. We watched sharks glide overhead in an underwater tunnel, spotted sea turtles swimming around Turtle Lagoon, and found everything from jellyfish and seahorses to octopus, shrimp, crabs, and colorful fish.
We spent almost two hours exploring, and when we reached the end, one of the boys immediately said, “Let’s do it again!” So we practically went through the whole aquarium twice.
But would I recommend paying full admission for a family with preschoolers? Here’s our honest Maui Ocean Center review, including what our kids loved, what we skipped, how long we spent, and whether I think it’s worth the price.

Is Maui Ocean Center Worth It With Toddlers and Preschoolers?
For our 3- and 5-year-olds, yes! It was one of those activities that surprised us by how much they enjoyed it.
To be completely honest, though, I don’t think we would have booked Maui Ocean Center at full price before our visit. Maui is already an expensive family vacation, and we have excellent aquariums closer to home. We were hesitant to spend so much on an attraction we’d probably finish in a couple of hours.
The discounted visit changed my mind. Our kids were completely engaged, and watching their excitement made it feel worthwhile. Now that I know how much they loved it, we’d happily go again—even paying full price.
That doesn’t mean it’s a must-do for every family. If you’re on a tight vacation budget, I’d prioritize the Maui experiences that matter most to you. But for families with 3- to 5-year-olds who are fascinated by sharks, turtles, and fish, Maui Ocean Center is a really fun choice.
UNDERWATER SHARK TUNNEL!
Our Favorite Things to See at Maui Ocean Center With Kids
1. Open Ocean and the Underwater Shark Tunnel
This was one of the biggest highlights of our visit! The Open Ocean exhibit has an underwater tunnel where you can watch sharks and other marine life swim overhead and around you. Seeing those animals up close, without even getting wet, was so exciting for our preschoolers.
They also loved the larger reef and ocean exhibits, where there seemed to be something new to spot every time we looked into a tank. We could have lingered here for quite a while.
My tip: Don’t rush through the tunnel. Give little kids time to stand still, look up, and see what swims past. It was one of the exhibits our boys wanted to revisit.
2. Turtle Lagoon
The Hawaiian green sea turtles at Turtle Lagoon were another favorite. Our boys loved watching them swim around, and we stayed long enough to see them from different viewpoints.
There’s something special about seeing the marine animals that make Hawaiʻi’s ocean so incredible—especially with little ones who may not be ready for snorkeling yet.
3. The Smaller Marine-Life Exhibits
It wasn’t just the big animals that held their attention. We loved spotting octopus, shrimp, crabs, fish, jellyfish, and seahorses throughout the aquarium.
These smaller exhibits were perfect for preschoolers because there was always something different to look for. The boys were so curious, and we kept stopping to find another creature hiding or swimming by.
4. The Little Playground
One of the nicest surprises was finding a small playground that was perfect for their ages. After looking at all the marine life, it was a fun chance to move around and play for a bit.
I always appreciate an attraction that gives younger kids an opportunity to burn off a little energy between activities!
Are the Daily Presentations Worth It With Preschoolers?
Maui Ocean Center offers daily presentations where marine naturalists share fascinating information about the animals and their habitats.
We attended one of the shark presentations, which I personally found fascinating! However, it didn't hold our 3- and 5-year-olds' attention nearly as much as watching the animals themselves.
My tip: If you happen to be near an exhibit when a presentation starts, it's worth stopping to listen! But with preschoolers, I wouldn't plan your entire visit around the presentation schedule. Our boys were much happier exploring at their own pace.
How Long Do You Need at Maui Ocean Center?
We arrived at 11:45 a.m. and left around 1:30 p.m., so we spent about an hour and 45 minutes there. In that time, we saw all the exhibits we wanted to visit—and practically went around twice because the kids wanted to see everything again.
I’d plan on about two hours with preschoolers, or a little longer if you want to eat, listen to presentations, or see the 3D Sphere experience. Maui Ocean Center also estimates that a typical visit takes around two to two and a half hours.
It’s a nice half-day outing, rather than an attraction you need to plan your entire day around.
Should You Do the 3D Whale Sphere Experience With Little Kids?
Maui Ocean Center has a 3D Sphere experience featuring Hawaiʻi’s humpback whales. It’s included with general admission, but the aquarium says the experience is not suitable for children under age 4.
Since our youngest was 3, we didn’t even attempt it. We simply enjoyed the rest of the aquarium together, and the boys certainly didn’t feel like they missed out!
If you’re visiting with a mix of ages, keep that restriction in mind when planning your day. Families with older kids may want to allow additional time for the Sphere.
Maui Ocean Center Ticket Prices: What Does It Cost for a Family?
Here’s the part that made us hesitate before going: Maui Ocean Center isn’t cheap.
As of October 2026, general admission on the official Maui Ocean Center ticket page starts at:
Age Starting admission price
Adults (13–64) $49.95
Children (4–12) $39.95
Children 3 and younger Free
Prices can vary by date, and taxes and fees are extra. That means a family like ours—two adults, a 3-year-old, and a 5-year-old—would start at approximately $140 before taxes, fees, and parking. If both children are ages 4 or older, the total would be higher.
We got lucky because another family staying at our hotel gave us two tickets they couldn’t use. Our youngest entered free, and the ticket we purchased for our older child came to about $50 after taxes and fees.
I want to be upfront about that because it definitely influenced our decision to go. We probably wouldn’t have visited without those tickets. But after seeing how much the boys enjoyed it, I’m genuinely glad we went—and I would pay to visit again.
Money-saving tip: Check the official pricing calendar before your visit. The aquarium recommends booking in advance for the best available price.
Parking at Maui Ocean Center
Parking was straightforward. There’s a large lot in front of the aquarium, but visitor parking is not free.
The lot uses Parklinq, and visitors pay for parking by selecting the amount of time they need. Look for the signs with a QR code when you arrive and pay on your phone. Since charges are time-based, remember to allow enough time for your visit and any food stops.
Food, Dole Whip, and Shave Ice at Maui Ocean Center
You don’t have to leave the aquarium area to find something to eat, which is always helpful when you’re traveling with little kids!
Seascape at Maui Ocean Center: The sit-down restaurant overlooking Māʻalaea Harbor, with meal options if you want to make lunch part of your visit.
Reef Café: A casual spot with drinks, snacks, and pineapple Dole Whip—always a fun find in Hawaiʻi!
Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice: Another sweet treat option right at the aquarium.
We didn’t need to make the visit into a full-day outing, but I appreciated having food and treat options on-site. If you’re planning around preschooler mealtimes, you could easily combine the aquarium with lunch or shave ice.
Just note that the aquarium generally doesn’t allow outside food and drinks, with limited exceptions, so check its current policy if you’re bringing food for young children.
Is Maui Ocean Center a Good Rainy-Day Activity?
It’s better than a beach day when the weather isn’t cooperating, but it isn’t completely rainproof.
Some aquarium exhibits are indoors or covered, but you still walk outside between exhibits. If it’s pouring, you could get wet moving from one area to another.
I think Maui Ocean Center is a great option for an overcast day, a break from the beach, or weather with occasional light showers. I wouldn’t describe it as a fully indoor rainy-day activity, though, especially with little kids in a heavy downpour.
Tips for Visiting Maui Ocean Center With Kids Ages 3–5
After our visit, here’s what I’d tell another family planning to go:
Allow about two hours. That’s a comfortable amount of time for preschoolers to explore at their own pace.
Check the admission prices ahead of time. Children age 3 and younger enter free, but ticket prices rise once they turn 4.
Don’t skip the underwater shark tunnel or Turtle Lagoon. They were two of our boys’ absolute favorites.
Let the kids revisit their favorite exhibits. Ours enjoyed the aquarium so much they asked to go around again!
Check the Sphere age guidance. The whale film isn’t suitable for children under 4, so we skipped it as a family.
Pay for parking when you arrive. Have your phone handy for the Parklinq QR code.
Plan around the weather. Expect some outdoor walking between exhibits, even though many viewing areas are sheltered.
Leave room for a treat. Dole Whip and Ululani’s Shave Ice are fun options if you want to finish your aquarium visit on a sweet note.
Check the park map and daily presentation schedule when you arrive. We enjoyed exploring at our own pace, but there are several presentations throughout the day if your kids are interested in learning more about the animals.
Maui Ocean Center With Kids: Frequently Asked Questions
Is Maui Ocean Center good for a 3-year-old?
It was fantastic for our 3-year-old! There was plenty to see, especially the turtles, sharks, and smaller marine animals. Children age 3 and under also enter free. The main limitation for this age is the 3D Sphere, which isn’t suitable for children under 4.
Is Maui Ocean Center good for a 5-year-old?
Absolutely, at least in our experience! Our 5-year-old was so interested in the animals that he wanted to go through the exhibits all over again. It’s a great age to notice details, ask questions, and get excited about marine life.
Can you bring a stroller to Maui Ocean Center?
Yes. Maui Ocean Center describes its pathways as stroller-friendly. If you’re visiting with a younger toddler who may get tired walking, a stroller could come in handy.
Is Maui Ocean Center entirely indoors?
No. Several exhibits are indoors or covered, but you’ll walk outside between them. It’s not a completely weatherproof attraction.
How long does it take to see Maui Ocean Center?
We spent about an hour and 45 minutes, even with a second look at many of the exhibits. Two hours is a good starting point for a visit with preschoolers; allow longer if you want a meal or the 3D Sphere experience.
Can you spot the crab?
Final Verdict: Would We Visit Maui Ocean Center Again?
Yes, absolutely! And that’s coming from someone who initially wasn’t sure the price was worth it.
The cost is the biggest drawback, especially for a family already spending a lot on a Maui vacation. But our 3- and 5-year-olds were delighted by the underwater tunnel, sharks, turtles, and tiny sea creatures. They stayed interested throughout our visit and even wanted to see everything again.
If your kids love ocean animals, Maui Ocean Center can be a memorable part of a Maui trip. I’m so glad those unexpected tickets gave us the push to go. Knowing what I know now, I’d happily bring the boys back.
